Design Thinking & UX Consulting

As a problem solver, I help clients work out solutions through design thinking.

[visual_portfolio id="1175"] I help clients come up with improved app, product and service ideas as a design thinking disruptor, a consultant who focuses on tying in your business needs, users experience and world needs. Of course, the solutions have to be viable, feasible and desirable, but that doesn't mean we don't benefit from going pie-in-the-sky a bit to open out ideas and gain inspiration to problem solving from all sorts of places that linear thinking might not have thought of. I call this approach the 'traffic lights' and it's my personal approach that has been designed and iterated over a decade towards helping more local and SME businesses get more out of their business through seeking design solutions first that also latch onto user experience. I'm currently working with a non-profit organisation on an innovative solution to help combat coronavirus in workplaces, as well as designing a better flow system to suit our changing world conditions in cafes and other facilities, and trying to finally put this site together again properly. Over the last decade there's been a multitude of new terms banded about which has likely confused many. So, what does a design thinking consultant do? Simply put, I help individuals and companies solve design problems to match their business goals with user needs. Take one example. I was commissioned to 'design think' of a more efficient process for a petrol station lane that was getting backed up onto the motorway, leading to people not visiting that station and causing a potential hazard. The solution was to create fastlanes only for petrol, app zapping to pay quicker, and a seperate lane that fed around to the store and other pumps for those wanting to buy products. This cleared up traffic and improved business sales of the pumps and the store. Some say design thinking and UX are different and honestly the more you read about it the more you would get confused as some people new to the field are trying to come across as experts but are really just guessing. Design Thinking is the mental process that goes into coming up with design solutions with the aim of developing user-centred experiences. With the petrol station this involved coming up with a better user experience which simulataneously helped then solve a business problem. Take a homeless project to raise awareness. The aim was to ensure people were more interested in hearing the plight of people who were made homeless, and a designed solution around this was to create a game that led people around a city learning more about the person before meeting them. User experience has empathy. As a UX designer the process involves much iteration to see what works and what develops a better experience. This is often thought of simply as online interactions, but UX is not restricted to that. UX is a real psychology meets design perspective. You design better spaces, experiences, interactions, processes for the real world as much as the online one. While I have had experience working for corporations, it remained brief, as I found the best way to really explore ideas and become a good design thinker was to seek how it could help smaller xompanies and situations. It's not tech firms who need innovation, it's other industries that are lacking behind and have little innovative thought. UXD comes in after when focusing on developing a human-centred approach to iteration around ensuring the product or service fits the need or user behaviour, design thinking takes more innovative angle at seeing what could be invented to solve a problem and then feeds into the user experience iteration. When we can all think like design thinkers then we can open our minds up more to new possibillities. Ux designers might focus on a specific need but aren't always so good at coming up with new solutions, just iterations that fit a users need from prototyping and testing. solving problems such as organizational design, business, marketing issues in the company - problems which does not come under any traditional purview of Design. The reason for that is because designers have a different approach to problem solving(more human-centered, behavior-focused etc) and sometimes they were able to come up with very innovative solutions and perspectives to problems outside of traditional "design" inspire, iterate and implement. On the other hand as a UX consultant/freelancer, is simply enhancing an experience. It's not revolutionising a product, but enhancing the interaction with a product or service. Brunnel was a design thinker, as he wanted to ensure that the end user would have a comfortable exeprience and designed solutions to fit that. I've helped numerous clients over the years SPECIALIST IN LOCAL DESIGN THINKING SOLUTIONS EFFECTIVE DESIGN THINKING 'SPRINT PROCESS' TO IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS I'm a thinker. I've always liked psychology and thinking of future innovations. These interests formed the basis of my career where I help clients work out 'creatical' solutions through design thinking. I developed an expertise in facilitating small-to-mid-sized (SME) businesses & startups research, ideate & develop user-centered design solutions & processes to match their business needs & goals. Gamification. Design Thinking is starting with a problem (e.g. people want to read more, but don't have time) and looking for a valid solution (e.g. audiobooks). User experience is starting from a solution (e.g. audiobooks) and making that work in a user context (e.g. we need an android app that integrates with Google Home to read our audiobooks) In business speak: Design Thinking= the 'what' User Experience= the 'how' Design Thinking & UX I've years experience as a design thinking consultant (in both UX design & social innovation) that cohabitated nicely with other ventures in my journey.

I specialise in facilitating design sprints for local SME-sized clients and startups, helping them ideate, prototype & iterate more efficient design systems, spaces, products & services that deliver a better overall user experience to empathise with both users needs and client goals.

I also help clients generate, brand and develop feasible ideas for their personal or business projects.

Creating content. Freelance. Richly places consideration into the potential need for brand identity, online registration requirements, current industry trends & competition, and of course, local design thinking & user experience practices that can set you apart in your local industry.

Design thinking practices don’t have to be for the giant corporations, it can work on a local stage too, and as micro-businesses are starting to boom there’s a lot of scope for local design thinking practices.

Having a recognisable identity isnt just for a large scale corporation. A local business can give a lasting impression to its customers with the right branding message and image.

Visual communication is an important part of business. Much of what we perceive about a product, service, or even an individual, is done before we are even consciously aware of it.

This is especially true today where any local business can gain an online presence, and where we have to take in so much visual information before making a conscious decision of what we want.

The subliminal messages behind our branding can really help a potential customer connect your product to a positive message and image. Give the wrong message and customers might not understand what it is you are even offering.

Creatics are a type of createup, but involves finding someone else as a disruptor who can give constructive criticism by pulling out problems with your ideas to help you iterate towards more valid solutions. We need this just as much as a shoulder of inspiration and praise, as disruptors help us pick out the problems we might have missed due to being too attached to an idea that either just does not work or there is a need for. Having someone there to look from the outside-in can be an invaluable resource (& mentor) that leads to more output than going it alone.

Createups work in conjunction with Cafe.Work.Study (an extended Richly Venture partnership in progress), that aims to help make it easier for freelancers and students to find cafes to work or study on-the-go, and which fit their personal needs and learning styles better than generic chain cafes.

There is even a Healinno Kids version in the pipeline that gets kids to be creative, forward-thinkers, important as they are the future and have so many creative ideas that could be utilised better in the world.

As this project is still in development, details cant be realised yet, but much more will follow.
